Give the chimp a banana
...and a bowl of corn flakes
Donnez une banane
au chimpanzé... et un bol de corn-flakes
As one man puts
it: "I think Bush has run the country into the ground economically, and he comes out with
these crazy ideas like going to Mars and going to the moon," said Richard Bidlack, a
78-year-old retiree from Boonton, N.J., who says he voted for Bush in 2000. "I'm so upset
at Bush, I'll vote for a chimpanzee before I would vote for him."
Many people
perhaps would not realize that most papers around the world, and from all political
sectors, carry a great deal of news about what the US is doing and how it's decisions
effect the world, especially in the poorer countries. Consistently I hear and see how
people's views of the US turn from believing it was the greatest place on Earth, to being
that of a bully. The "You are with us or against us" mentality is the most undemocratic
thing to their ears, and when you are smaller, shorter, and poorer than the one saying
this, it only breeds resentment. I love my country and want to tell people where I am from
with joy. I can't and it affects me more than I ever suspected.
Another form
of telling people what they want to hear and then not delivering it, on a much smaller
scale, happens to us all the time throughout our local travels...
Here is a typical
scenario in our daily epicurean quest:
One morning at breakfast, we view the
posted menu, and say, "We'll have boiled eggs, a tomato, toast, jam and coffee".
Local
woman says, "Ok, but no coffee, only tea".
"Hmmm. ok, tea".
20 minutes later
breakfast arrives and we notice some unsatisfaction, so I go up to the counter
"Ummm,
this is just white bread, we ordered toast and jam"
"No oven. Broke. Sorry".
"Uh,
ok. We were also supposed to get tomatoes"
"No tomato. Tomorrow we have
tomatoes."
"Well, I need something. How about one of those bananas?" I say pointing to
a box full of bananas.
"No. Bananas for corn flakes."
"Yea, but we are the last ones
to eat today, you have a ton of them, just give me one."
"No. Banana goes in
corn-flakes only.....
and so on and on.
There is always only one woman who makes
and serves breakfast so she knows what she has, but instead of telling us when we order,
she lets us wait and then just brings us a slice of white bread and an egg. We laughed
when another guy walked in and ordered the same thing.
confiture."
- "Pas de four. Cassé. Désolé."
- "Euh, ok. Nous étions aussi supposés
avoir des tomates."
- "Pas de tomates. Demain nous aurons des tomates."
- "Bien,
